What has changed in the Shopify App Store since this post was first published?

Since this post first went live in January 2023, the App Store has grown and several apps mentioned above have changed or closed. As of October 2026, here is what to know before you install anything.

  • The store is bigger. Shopify’s App Store page now says it has “over 16,000 apps”, up from the 4,000-plus quoted in the original post. More choice also means more overlap, so compare carefully.

  • Stocky is shutting down. Shopify’s Help Center says Stocky will no longer be available after August 31, 2026, it can no longer be installed from the App Store, and Shopify recommends moving to its built-in inventory management features.

  • TradeGecko is gone. Intuit acquired TradeGecko, renamed it QuickBooks Commerce and later retired it as a standalone product, so treat it as unavailable.

  • Swell Rewards is now Yotpo. Yotpo acquired Swell Rewards and rebranded it as Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals.

  • Checkout apps now rely on extensions. Shopify’s developer documentation says checkout.liquid is no longer supported for the Information, Shipping and Payment steps, and that Thank you and Order status page customizations have moved to checkout extensions. Its listed sunset dates for script tags on those pages are August 28, 2025 for Plus stores and August 26, 2026 for other stores. Before adding a checkout app, confirm it is built on Shopify’s checkout extensibility.

How do you choose the right Shopify app?

Choose a Shopify app by starting with one measurable goal, such as repeat purchase rate or average order value, then shortlist apps built for that job. Favor apps with the Built for Shopify badge, recent reviews and clear pricing, install one at a time, and measure its impact before adding another.

  • Define the job first. Decide whether you need more email revenue, repeat purchases, a higher average order value or better reporting, and pick the category that matches.

  • Look for the Built for Shopify badge. According to Shopify’s documentation, it signals an app meets Shopify’s standards for safety, security, reliability, performance, ease of use and proven usefulness, and apps are reviewed annually.

  • Read the listing properly. Check recent reviews, pricing, free trial terms, and what the app needs access to before you approve it.

  • Plan for support. Most apps are built by third-party developers, not Shopify, so for app-specific problems you contact the developer directly, as Shopify’s Help Center explains.

  • Test and measure. Add one app, watch your analytics for a few weeks, and uninstall anything that is not paying its way. Our guide to ongoing Shopify maintenance explains why regular app reviews matter.

Growing your Shopify app as a developer

If you are looking to grow your Shopify app rather than choose one for your store, Built for Shopify status is worth aiming for. Shopify says it brings a highlighted listing, a search filter, a search ranking boost and eligibility for promotion on other merchant surfaces.

When should you bring in a Shopify expert?

If your app stack is slowing your store, overlapping, or still cannot do what you need, a custom Shopify solution may replace several apps with one purpose-built feature. As a Shopify Platinum Partner, ITGeeks can help you hire Shopify experts to audit your apps, build custom functionality, or improve how your store converts through conversion rate optimization. You can contact our team to talk it through.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Shopify’s app store offers a wide variety of apps that can help you maximize your store’s potential. From customer service apps to inventory management apps, there is an app for every need. When choosing an app, it’s important to consider your specific business needs and find an app that aligns with your goals and can help you achieve them. With the right apps in place, you can streamline your operations, increase sales, create a seamless customer experience, and much more. Additionally, it is important to keep an eye on the analytics and the performance of your store to make sure that the apps you have implemented are working well and that you are getting the results you are aiming for. Remember, with Shopify’s app store, the possibilities are endless, and the right apps can help you take your store to the next level.
